Types of Benefit Auctions
Benefit auctions are alive and well locally and nationally. According to a survey conducted by MOREPACE International for the National Auctioneers Association, in 2005 benefit auctions generated 14.6 billion dollars. Benefit auctions are a highly successful revenue-generating vehicle. Make sure you hire the right professionals for your benefit auction event. Kurt Johnson Auctioneering, Inc. will teach you proven methods for success, and just as critical, important pitfalls to avoid.Silent Auctions
A silent auction is conducted via written or electronic bids and represents the ultimate in competitive shopping. Learn the keys to item procurement, item-to-attendee ratio, item display, and the critical part that announcements, timing and automated check-out play.Live Auctions
A live auction is conducted by interaction between an auctioneer and the audience. If your event’s primary goal is fundraising, this portion of the evening will be the culmination of months of careful planning, item procurement, and carefully selected and displayed premiere items. Let Kurt Johnson Auctioneering, Inc. teach you the importance of selecting the right items for the right crowd, and the critical role that timing and item ordering play.Live auctions can be incorporated into a number of event formats:• Art auctions—Events designated to highlight and sell works of art—canvas, ceramic, glass, jewelry, photography, sculpture, tapestry, to name a few. These events may include silent, live and/or online auctions.
• Festivals—Typically held at churches and schools, these events frequently incorporate a carnival atmosphere with rides, flea markets, music, silent and live auctions.
• Galas—The premiere event on an organization’s calendar, these fetes usually include hors d’oeuvres and/or dinner, a program with speakers and awards, silent and/or live auctions, and entertainment.
• Golf tournaments—Many golf tournaments now incorporate a small live auction component into their events to add an extra level of fun and excitement.
• Online auctions—These auctions can be held on their own or in conjunction with any of the events listed above. They are often done in real time with the live auction portion of an event.
• Wine dinners—Gaining in popularity, these dinners typically feature four course dinners prepared by a well-known chef (or series of chefs), and flights of wine chosen by a sommelier. A Live auction is incorporated into the festivities.Kurt Johnson Auctioneering, Inc. has experience with all of these event formats and is excited to lend our expertise to your next event. Clients
What our clients are saying…
“Our auction is not only a chance to raise money, it’s a chance to bring the community together and remind everyone of why they care about Chorus America and its mission, and is a chance to get them excited about the future. I was delighted by Kurt Johnson’s approach to leading fundraising auctions because he had the same thing in mind—it’s about heart, the people, and what we’re trying to accomplish. Our auction has been pretty ‘mom and pop’ run, but that wasn’t an obstacle for Kurt. He worked closely with us and made some great suggestions to make our systems run better. At the pre-auction meeting with the volunteers and event staff, Kurt covered every detail and
approached the evening like a ‘show’ with a script to keep things moving at a good pace. At the auction that night he combined his skills as an auctioneer with his ability to communicate the case for support, and inspired many new bids and gifts. He wasn’t just our professional auctioneer, he became part of the event team and his input was invaluable throughout. I would recommend his firm without hesitation."--Catherine Dehoney, Event Coordinator, Chorus America (Washington, D.C.)
“Kurt, I would like to thank you so very much for the wonderful job you did at the ECS Gala. We had never used a professional auctioneer in the past and had a lot of discussion before we hired you. Your recommendations were excellent, but we, of course, wondered if we should spend the money for your fee when we could possibly do the job just as well with one of our own as we had done in the past. Well, believe me, the group is unanimous that the money was well spent! Every guest I have talked with said that they had never had so much fun! Your presence was very charismatic; your banter upbeat, appropriate, and humorous; and your ability to keep things moving very effective. The Board truly appreciated your familiarizing yourself so well with our mission and communicating with enthusiasm and passion the worth of our work and the genuine need of our clients. The volunteers and staff with whom you conducted your “Benefit Auction 101” and pre-gala orientation felt confident and comfortable with their duties, and the event went as smooth as silk. I am truly grateful for a job well done and will be more than happy to enthusiastically recommend you to whomever I can."–Margaret McBride, Event Chair, Episcopal Community Services
“Kurt Johnson has definitely earned the title ‘Auctioneer and MC Extraordinaire.’ The Linus Blankets Saint Paul live auction was an astounding success because of Kurt Johnson. Kurt strives for excellence and it shows…he truly cared about the results. He is a true professional who is dedicated to understanding his client’s needs; does his research; and strategically plans how to best optimize the auction results. Kurt was more than our auctioneer…he was part of our team! The auction audience was captivated and filled with excitement and anticipation. They had FUN and were entertained by his style, energy, and humor. It was a wonderful afternoon and we were not ready for the magic to end! Thank you Kurt, you outdid yourself!"–Sue Gonsior, Director of Communications, Capital City Partnership
“Kurt and Connie, thank you for celebrating your 1000th auction at St. John the Evangelist School in Little Canada. You and your team helped make our auction event spectacular with your entertaining and lively performance and enthusiasm, and by greeting our guests in costume. Your expert advice made a huge difference in our auction by helping us surpass our financial goals and achieve a sold-out event. Each year our auction improves and this can be attributed to your dedication and guidance."–Laura Wegscheid, St. John the Evangelist School
“Kurt made our auction a resounding success through his expert guidance and planning. His ability to obtain the bids needed, in a wonderful comedic fashion, achieved a fun event and far surpassed our fundraising goals."—Ingrid Anderson, Community Relations, Crystal Lake Good Samaritan Center
“On behalf of me, the auction committee and the entire Trinity Lone Oak community, THANK YOU. Thank you for coming and doing a pre-auction consultation for us. Thank you for you for the humor, kindness and professionalism that you showed us all as you did the live auction. The auction generated the most money we have ever raised."--Brenda Martens, Auction Coordinator, Trinity Lone Oak School
“Kurt, you are excellent at driving the bidding process to its highest point! This year’s event exceeded expectations on so many levels thanks to your participation."–Kim Baker and Deb Jordan, Event Co-Chairs, Children’s Cancer Research Fund
“Colonel Kurt, thanks for the terrific job you did for us at Merrie Market this year. We were all delighted with the Live Auction results, and it was a pleasure to work with you! We also enjoyed working with Connie—she’s a real asset. Many thanks."–Cathy Schneeman, Event Chair, Visitation School

"These pioneering women have forged their own paths to success and carved out new rules in business with intelligence, compassion and courage."Connie was asked the following questions and had these answers:What motivates you today?Professionally I’m motivated by two things:• Our company, Kurt Johnson Auctioneering, Inc., bears the name of the person I most love and respect—my husband, Kurt Johnson. I expect our company to reflect well on his character and reputation.
• Kurt Johnson Auctioneering, Inc.’s mission: To educate, motivate, entertain and benefit our clients.Who are your role models and/or mentors?I learned great lessons from:• My late father, Al Mueller. He balanced entrepreneurial savvy with kindness, compassion, and generosity. He earned people’s respect—both those who worked for him and those who sought his services--because he was relatable and instilled the trust that he could provide what they most needed from him.
• The late Brother Raymond Long, St. Mary’s University of Minnesota. Brother Ray was my favorite teacher and my valued advisor. He was the first person to tell me I had strong leadership qualities and his greatest gift was helping me to see the possibilities in myself.
• The international, cultural exchange program, Up With People. This program afforded me a year of experiential learning—a sort of internship on wheels. Advance promotion work with/for people around the globe provided both the means and necessity to reach for lofty goals, and to achieve them. Failing was not an option—so we didn’t!
